re-starting your sleep schedule

Maybe it's just my computer-geek side coming out, but I often think of real-life in terms of computers. Like "Edit-Undo" ... how many times have you said or done something and immediately wished you could hit "edit-undo" like you can when you're typing up a document? I know I'm not alone in thinking that.

Well, my sleep schedule has been off for a couple of months. Not being able to wake up in the morning and not being tired enough to fall asleep at night were causing me to feel constantly tired. What to do?

I decided to try to re-start my sleep schedule, just like you would your computer. Last Friday night, I tried to sleep, but I just lay there. My body wasn't tired enough to sleep.

So I got back up. No point lying there doing nothing! I surfed the web as the sun came up outside, and it was only around noon that I was actually tired enough to sleep. I slept from 12-6, got up for a few hours, and went to bed normally at midnight.

Ever since, I've been more like a normal person. I get tired around 8pm, and I'm usually in bed by 11. For the first couple of days, my body instinctively woke up between 445am and 6am, and now I'm regularly getting up at 730am. I feel less tired during the day, and I have the impression that I'm getting more done.

Even today, Saturday, I got up at 830am. It's only 430pm, but I've already prepared two weeks worth of lessons, looked over some corrections [thanks Delphine!], eaten breakfast and lunch, gone out to buy a couple of items, and watched some tv. I've still got a few more things to do today, but I've already been so productive!

Let's see how long I can maintain this schedule ...

I'm a 28-year-old American who has been living in France since September of 2003. I became a naturalized French citizen on April 21, 2009.

I teach English at one of the universities in Clermont-Ferrand, and I'm doing a doctorate in American civilization and history at the Université Lumière Lyon II in Lyon, France.

I also own and run a small website design company based in the United States. I'm slowly adding French clients as well.
