Les vacances du printemps

Also known as spring break. In France, the country is divided into three zones in order to avoid everyone going on vacation at the same time. They rotate each year, so one year your zone is the first group, then the second the following year, then the third. Damien's group is the last one this year.

After looking at the traffic forecast for yesterday and today, we decided to leave Paris at 9pm last night. Today's traffic was supposed to be heavy starting at 7am (!), and we figured it'd be better to drive when fewer people are on the road.

Now that it's spring, construction has started, and one of the roads that we normally take is closed. Even though we had updated the GPS, it didn't recognize that the road was closed. And the detour that we had to take would've been a huge pain in the butt if there had been any sort of traffic.

Damien got super tired around 1am, so I took the wheel for the last half hour. We got to Clermont at 1:30am.

On a side note, as we were driving home, i kept looking into the sky, and it was the weirdest thing to not see a single airplane. (As you probably know, because of the volcano that erupted in Iceland, a lot of airports in Northern Europe have been closed, including Paris' 2 airports). The difference was definitely felt, at least in the sky ... as the sun set, the sky was clear - there were no plane exhaust trails anywhere to be seen.

We're heading to D's brother's this afternoon and then to his parents' until Sunday night or Monday morning. It looks like it's going to be a nice weekend, high 60s, sunny ... hopefully I'll get to go for a run in the countryside at D's parents' !

I'm a 28-year-old American who has been living in France since September of 2003. I became a naturalized French citizen on April 21, 2009.

I teach English at one of the universities in Clermont-Ferrand, and I'm doing a doctorate in American civilization and history at the Université Lumière Lyon II in Lyon, France.

I also own and run a small website design company based in the United States. I'm slowly adding French clients as well.
